Killing
As perpetual industrialization persists across the globe, humans continue to encroach on lions' natural habitats forcing increased contact between the two species. African farmers will pre-emptively kill any lions that they believe may be a threat to their livestock or community. This, coupled with the ongoing habitat destruction, is devastating.
Trophy Hunting
There are currently 160 lion farms across Africa breeding more than 5,000 lions a year on a conveyer belt of cruelty.
Between 1999-2008, American tourists' trophies were responsible for 64% of all lions killed. Today, over 600 lions are killed LEGALLY every year by trophy hunting tourists. This is equal to 2% of the total population being lost annually.
Poaching
In Uganda, bushmeat snares are responsible for the massive 60% decline in its lion population. With profit being the number one motive, hundreds of lions are killed annually for their skins, heads, or meat and sold through a network which spans Africa and links to many Asian cities as well. Though some countries have implemented bans, very few poachers get caught.
